Eliza Cook - Poet and Chartist
Paperback
Elizabeth Cathie
Eliza Cook was an early nineteenth-century poet and supporter of the Chartist Movement. Between 1838 and 1848, this movement was a driving force for social change, for improved conditions for working-class people - both at home and at work - and for a fairer and more equal voting system in which all men would have the right to vote. The book contains a selection of her poems, chosen to show the social and moral issues which she wrote about, with a short introduction to Eliza Cook and to the poems. The book ends with an informative chapter about the Chartist Movement, which gives the reader an insight into the growing industrialisation which was the background to the Chartist Movement. This is a book for those who love poetry, for those who enjoy eighteenth century literature, and for those who have an interest in social history and social change.
